What is lens exchange?
Lens exchange, also known as refractive lens exchange, is an operation in which the eye’s natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens implant.
This can treat:
-
short-sightedness
-
long-sightednes
-
astigmatism
-
age-related reading blur (presbyopia)
It is very similar to modern cataract surgery, except it is performed before a cataract has become the main issue.
Depending on the lens chosen, it can reduce the need for both distance glasses and reading glasses.

Laser Eye Surgery vs Lens Exchange
Which Is Right for Me?
If you are thinking about reducing your dependence on glasses or contact lenses, you may have come across two of the commonest options: laser eye surgery and lens exchange.
The simplest way to think about it is this:
-
Laser eye surgery changes the shape of the front of the eye
-
Lens exchange changes the lens inside the eye
As a general rule Laser eye surgery is often best for younger patients with healthy corneas who want to reduce their glasses prescription for distance. Lens exchange is often better for patients who are starting to need reading glasses, have early lens ageing, or want a more complete long-term solution.
But the right answer depends on the individual.

The best way to decide is through a detailed consultation and examination, where we can discuss not only what you are suitable for, but what is most likely to give you the best outcome.
